Grid demand forecasting software — short, mid & long term

Forecast electricity consumption at the ISO and grid level across every time horizon — from real-time intraday to 5-year strategic outlooks. Ensemble ML models retrained hourly, consistently outperforming ISO baselines by 3x.

What is grid demand forecasting?

Grid demand forecasting predicts total electricity consumption at the ISO or grid level across multiple time horizons — short-term (intraday to 7 days), mid-term (weeks to months), and long-term (1–5 years). It also includes net load forecasting, which subtracts behind-the-meter solar and wind generation from total demand to capture the true load the grid must serve.

Energy traders rely on grid demand forecasts for day-ahead bidding and intraday position management. Grid operators use them for real-time balancing and reliability. Utilities and planners use longer-term forecasts for capacity planning, seasonal hedging, and regulatory filings.

Amperon's grid forecasting products

Grid demand short term forecast
Horizon:
Intraday to 7 days
Update frequency:
Hourly
Use cases:
Intraday trading, real-time operations, day-ahead bidding
Short-term demand forecast at the ISO level — Amperon's most-used product. Updated hourly with fresh weather and demand data, it provides the most responsive grid demand signal available for day-ahead and real-time market decisions. The model ingests public ISO demand feeds plus proprietary weather blends to produce forecasts that consistently beat ISO baselines.

Grid net demand short term forecast
Horizon:
Same as grid demand short term forecast
Update frequency:
Hourly
Use cases:
Renewables-heavy grids, net load trading, behind-the-meter visibility
Net demand subtracts estimated behind-the-meter solar and wind generation from total gross demand. As renewable penetration grows, gross demand alone no longer tells the full story — the grid must serve net load, not gross load. Essential for any market with significant distributed generation, and increasingly critical in ERCOT, CAISO, and SPP.

Grid demand mid term forecast
Horizon:
Weeks to months
Update frequency:
xxx
Use cases:
Seasonal planning, forward hedging, budget setting
Mid-term demand outlook for the planning horizon between short-term trading and long-term capacity decisions. Used by traders for seasonal position management, by utilities for procurement budgeting, and by risk teams for forward hedge calibration. Bridges the gap that most forecasting vendors leave uncovered between their short-term and mid-term forecast products.

X

Week forecast horizon with weekly updates
Grid demand long term forecast
Horizon:
1–5 years
Update frequency:
51 stochastic scenarios incl. weather analogs
Use cases:
Capacity planning, infrastructure investment, scenario modeling, regulatory filings
Long-term demand forecast with probabilistic scenario modeling. Generates 51 distinct demand trajectories based on historical analog weather years, enabling resource adequacy planning, capital allocation decisions, and regulatory submissions. Used by utilities, grid planners, and investment teams who need a defensible range of outcomes, not a single-point guess.

1

Data ingestion

Public ISO demand data combined with 25+ years of historical weather data and real-time weather feeds. Multiple weather model sources blended for optimal accuracy.

ML Modeling

Ensemble machine learning models retrained and updated hourly as new demand and weather data arrives. Each ISO has dedicated model architectures tuned to that market's characteristics.

Output delivery

Short-term and long-term portfolio forecasts delivered via API or Snowflake. Automated day-ahead scheduling pushed directly to the ISO. Threshold alerts flag data anomalies before they impact bids.

Continuous learning loop

Models self-improve with every new data point. Accuracy compounds over time as the training dataset grows and the model adapts to shifting demand patterns, EV adoption, and electrification trends.
